Authenticity As A Competitive Moat

When you compete on authenticity, you stop competing on price.

Being real is rare. Most brands try to be louder, not truer. But modern audiences are fluent in manipulation — they can sense exaggeration instantly.

Authenticity isn't just moral; it's practical. It filters the wrong clients, attracts aligned ones, and reduces friction across every touchpoint. You can't fake consistency. And consistency is what compounds into authority.

Chris's ESPN Story

Be Yourself — Everyone Else Is Already Taken

Disney/ABC/ESPN once hired me as on-air talent to co-host a daily talk show from their World Headquarters in Bristol, CT. I was overwhelmed when I started and early on tried to craft an on-air personality that sounded like the other most successful hosts.

One day, my Executive Producer pulled me aside and scolded me that I wasn't hired (from thousands of applicants) to mirror or copy others, but rather to be my unique and compelling self.

The light bulb went on! I focused on authenticity and ratings skyrocketed. I never forgot that lesson. Be yourself, everyone else is already taken!
